Unlike some NGO’s we do NOT charge a volunteering fee to be a teacher at Learn4Life. Students pay a low fee for their classes which keeps our organisation sustainable.

Who are we looking for?
Responsible, independent, reliable, native (or close to) English speakers with a strong commitment to helping others. You will need to be passionate about teaching in developing countries. Time management, attention to detail and organisational skills are also very important. Respect for the Cambodian/Asian culture, plus flexibility to cope with conditions different to those at home will ensure that you have an enjoyable time at Learn4Life.

Teachers must have completed a TEFL/CELTA or similar course. Ideally, teachers will be in the 23-50 age group, but older experienced teachers with a young at heart attitude are welcome to apply. We only require teachers who can make a commitment for 1 term (approximately 3 months), but preference will be given to teachers who want to be at Learn4Life for 2 or more terms.

Learn4LIfe (including outdoors) is a smoke-free zone. If you are a smoker our school will not be a suitable place for you to teach.

Teaching
Each teacher is required to teach 4 x 1hour lessons per day, five days a week. There is a break between classes for a quick snack, coffee or phone call.  We run classes throughout the day from 7:30am to 9:00pm. Occasionally, when teachers need time off you may be asked to cover one or more of their lessons for those days.

While we try to allocate shifts to suit the teacher’s personal preference, this is not always possible. Due to the way the classes have evolved all teachers will need to teach 1 or 2 lessons at night.

We use the English Straightforward curriculum for Beginner through to Intermediate. We work from 3 books; a Student’s Book, a Workbook (students use these in class) and a Teacher’s Book. This manual outlines step by step lesson plans for the units. There are also additional resources such as worksheets, reading comprehension and song sheets (with their audio tracks). Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of time in some terms to use many of these additional resources.

We expect you to prepare and plan your lessons, however, because of the structure of the curriculum and the Teacher’s Book this is kept to a minimum (maybe 1-2 hours per day).

The curriculum involves teaching grammar, listening, reading comprehension, writing and speaking. You must be able to teach all of the four parts of the curriculum.

Each term involves 3 unit tests (approx. 3 weeks apart), and a final exam (4 days). The tests and exams (with answers) are provided by Learn4Life.

We hold a short meeting for teachers once or twice a term – this is on a Saturday morning.

Accommodation/Food
We do not provide accommodation or food, however you will be paid US$5.50 per teaching hour. This is usually enough to cover the cost of a safe rented room nearby, and local food. Rooms range from $100 per month (excluding electricity and water). There is a wide range of accommodation and some teachers prefer to pay a higher rent and live in a more luxurious apartment or guest house – the choice is yours depending on your budget. Local food is cheap – about $3.00 for a good healthy meal.

You can calculate how much your income will be by checking the school calendar on this website. The teaching days per month will vary depending on the term start/finish and Public Holidays.

You will need to arrive a few days before term starts so that you can get temporary accommodation, get the feel for Siem Reap and have your induction before the school term starts.

There are several hostels and guest houses near the school where you can stay until you find permanent accommodation within your budget. You will also need to consider what time your flight arrives as not all of these hostels and guest houses have 24hr reception.

The school has free bicycles which you can use for travelling to/from classes and having a look around Siem Reap in your free time.

There is a communal area at the school where you are welcome to do lesson planning, school photocopying, or have a cup of coffee etc. This is available 7.30am - 9pm Monday to Friday and 8am – 12pm Saturday. Free Wi-Fi is also available at the school.

Other costs you will have to allow for:
A visa on arrival is $US35 and this can then be extended for 3 months ($80) or 6 months ($160).

The situation for Work Permits is continually changing but if one is required then this is approximately $150 (for a calendar year).

Learn4Life is also tax compliant so you will be paying tax on your monthly income, but this is minimal. The first $300 per month is tax free, and then 5% up to $500.

How to become a teacher at L4L
Email your CV and include copies of any relevant qualifications to support your application. You will need to provide us with at least 2 referees who we can contact. In your cover letter tell us why you are applying for the position, what you can bring with you to Learn4Life and your preferred term dates. Personal interviews will be conducted via Skype. You are responsible for your own travel/health insurance and must provide us with a copy of this along with contact details for next-of-kin in case of an emergency.

If your application is successful we will only advise you of your guaranteed start date approximately 3 months prior to when you are needed. Things are always changing in Cambodia and this still allows you time to plan and book a cheap flight.

Once your placement has been guaranteed we will need a copy of your booked flight  to confirm your participation in our program.

Clothing
Cambodia has plenty of sunshine all year round and plenty of water in the wet season. For teaching purposes lightweight cotton clothes are recommended (no jeans). Loose fitting, inexpensive clothing can be found in the Siem Reap markets. For men teaching in long shorts is acceptable, especially in the hot summer months. Women must have legs (to mid-calf) and shoulders covered (no low-cut necklines) while at Learn4Life.
